Color items only, not tracks...?

I'm trying to set random "item" colors but, keep the default track gray, like Kenny has in his video. I've watched his entire tutorial. Many lessons several times. I don't remember him explaining how he set up random tinting of item takes and have the track color not change from default gray. I can't find this in the manual either. I'm trying to set this as a template. Of course I'm a little punchy from Reaper overload at this point. Thanks for any help.

Those screen shots look like an older version. And all this actions stuff is still a little cryptic to me. Anyway, found the similar prefs and checked and unchecked accordingly, created an action per linked post (near as I can figure it) and... nothing. Suggestions?

Okay I seemed to have figured this out. For anyone else: Install SWS Extensions; Open project >under Extensions menu select "auto color/icon">right click "unamed" select (any)>right click color, select "random"> check "Enable auto coloring". Wyatt thanks for your help.
