After short (2 month) lay up - 240 GLT autobox is reluctant to change up gear. It does eventually change but much higher up the rev range than previously. Additionally when moved into either "drive" or "reverse" from neutral - the clunk is much more evident than before. Kickdown is also inoperative at the moment.:swoon: Checked transmission oil level - seems ok. Any ideas? Would oil change help or is the g/box giving up:nah: cheers
Red 1, Take a look at the shift cable , this is attached to a round spool on the intake manifold, it is most likely siezed in the out position, in which case it will need replacement. Mister T.
hi first you should check the oil in the box with the engine running ,let it run for 5 minutes first then try as this will pump the oil to the oil cooler and round the box. i would do an oil change and also there is a filter in the bottom of the gearbox sump inside, this should make a big difference good luck gary

Update - just had kickdown cable replaced by local garage and have been driving around last few days ok. However noticed this evening car wouldn't reverse uphill (steep hills) at all well. Also general progress seems more "sluggish" than I recall, having not used car for a few weeks. Any thoughts? Is it possible the K/D cable has been wrongly set up which would cause this symptom? Gearbox dying? Pretty sure Dexron 11D was used when work carried out. :kilt::censored:

I worked at an independant volvo specialists about 15 years ago and as I remember to set the kd cable we used to un-hook the cable from the throttle spool and pull the cable out about 10mm and let go, a click should be heard at the gearbox end, if no click the cable is too tight, adjust with the lock nuts and repeat the process until a click is heard. I was taught this method by an ex-main stealer workshop manager, so I hope its right. good luck.
